Summary
A young boy has lost his grandfather and his parents leave him
at home in Connecticut while they go to California for the funeral.
Peter wishes he could have gone but his parents feel like he is
too young. He has no focus at school and can't help but cry so after
school he goes to the woods where his grandpa used to fish. It is
there he encounters Mrs. Murgatroyd who has magical paints that
enable him to paint a robot that can take him across the country
to the funeral. There he is able to say goodbye and find his own
way of accepting his loss.

What the Reviewer Liked
I like the magical fantasy land that is created in the boy's mind.
And how that enables him to move past his hurt of not being taken
to the funeral and to become a comfort to him after his loss.

Kara is the Gothic root of the word "care."
It means to reach out, to care, to lament, to grieve with.
