Summary
A thirteen year-old girl learns that her normally strong, happy
and healthy mother has a rare cancer. Initially the girl believes
that it will all be okay, but after her mother is in the hospital
for a week she realizes it might not be okay. She sees her mother
slowly deteriorate and become skinny and her skin yellow. Her father
struggles with the idea of losing his wife and how much to tell
his daughter. On Christmas Eve her mother passes away, but up until
that point the daughter, father and mother are all living each day
to the fullest and appreciating the time that they have together.

Kara is the Gothic root of the word "care."
It means to reach out, to care, to lament, to grieve with.
