Grief Support Volunteers

Kara is looking for volunteers who would like to learn how to support others through the grief process. Our next volunteer training will be held in the fall of 2008.

Kara currently needs volunteers in the following areas:

  • Counselors for individual adult clients
  • Group facilitators to co-lead adult groups
  • Group facilitators for children and teen groups
  • Outreach facilitators and speakers for community education
  • Outreach facilitators for on-site grief crisis intervention
  • Spanish speaking volunteers
  • Volunteers from the LBGT community

Informational Meetings will be held prior to training at the Kara offices located at 457 Kingsley Avenue, Palo Alto. The meetings include an overview of Kara's services and an informational video of former Kara clients describing their counseling experiences.

Trainees must attend all six training sessions, held on weekday evenings and Saturdays over the course of two weeks. Click below for a detailed flyer with schedule and a Volunteer Application form. Please fax (650-473-1828) or mail your completed application form to Kara.

If you need more information, please contact us or call (650) 321-5272.

Event and Office Volunteers

Kara also needs volunteers to help in the office (mailings, MS Access database applications, website updating) and to help support Kara's events. Please contact us or call (650) 321-5272. These volunteer positions do not require the training sessions that our grief support volunteers go through.

Kara is the Gothic root of the word "care."
It means to reach out, to care, to lament, to grieve with.

Words of Comfort

Trying to be 'strong' for others often postpones grief and the rebuilding process. I do not expect you to be strong for me. Rather, I will take responsibility for my own healing.
